Picture RestorationRestoration of oil paintings and works of art on paper is highly skilled and requires extensive training and experience. We are often called upon to undertake, e.g., fire and flood damaged work. To make sure our clients get the superb results they expect we regularly work in close partnership with a highly skilled professional restorer, one who undertakes work for Trinity House and major museums and galleries. Condition reports are prepared including advice and estimates for the cost of restoration which can help owners to prioritise expenditure. Figure 1. Portrait of a Soldier, before restoration and cleaning is hanging loosely from its supporting stretcher. It shows a considerable loss of original paint. The vertical lines on the right of the portrait are acid burns. Figure 2. The same painting, after cleaning and during restoration We also restore some frames. Most faults can be corrected and the majority of frames can be restored. Restoration of frames is however labour intensive and it can often be less expensive to purchase a new frame. When it is obvious to us that it would be less expensive to buy a new frame we will advise clients of this. We undertake work for both individual clients and insurers and, upon request, will prepare assessments and quotations, together with photographs of the damage. Please contact us for further information. |
